2007 FISHING JOURNAL
November 15, 2007    -    Westerly, RI
Tide:  noon - High Wind:  SSW - 15-25 mph
Start time:  11:00 a.m. Total time:  5 Hrs.
The forecast was for a warm, rainy day so I decided to take a ride back to Watch Hill Light to see if any fish were still migrating. I have to hand it to the Rhody fisherman, even on November 15th there are lots of them out there in the surf. I finally hooked up with a good-sized late season Striper but, of course, I dropped it. At about 11:30, I was throwing the 2 oz yellow/red Gibbs into rough water with a big wind and light rain. And just like you imagine while you're making cast after cast, a big eruption in the white frothy water and I had a nice Striper on. She made a swirl on the surface to show me the big tail and I would guess 25 lbs. The fish kept going left and I walked along the rocks with it which was probably a mistake because eventually she got the line wrapped around a large rock and used the slack to scrape off the plug. Damn. I knew, at that time of year, you only get one chance and I blew it. Later in the afternoon I caught a 9 lb Bluefish and a small Striper. When I finally got off my rock, another guy took my place and almost immediately caught a 32" Striper. Sheesh.

Now I really think I'm done for this season. In the next few weeks I'll post more pictures from this season on the site and will make some changes and additions throughout the off-season. Thanks for reading and for the nice comments.

Tide:  8:00 a.m. - High Wind:  SW - 10-15 mph
Start time:  7:00 a.m. Total time:  4 Hrs.
Of course, I couldn't resist going back to see if the big Blues were still around. It was a much colder day and I never found the fish. I went back to all the same spots, and I saw birds working out of casting range, but didn't catch a thing.
November 6, 2007    -    Westerly, RI
Tide:  5:00 a.m. - High Wind:  SW - 20-25 mph
Start time:  6:00 a.m. Total time:  10 Hrs.
The last three years Paul and I have wrapped up the season with a long day of fishing in southern Rhode Island. This year we started in Charlestown around the Quonnie Breachway at false dawn and had no luck there with a big wind blowing. We drove down and tried the Watch Hill Light - nothing doing. Next we drove toward the Weekapaug Breachway and began seeing birds along the beaches. When we reached the breachway, there was a big blitz right off the end of the jetty. Birds were working and small Stripers were flopping all over the place. We were using tin because of the wind and getting small Stripers (15-22") on almost every cast. It lasted more than two hours.

We took a lunch break and headed back to the Watch Hill Light. It was still heavily overcast and the wind had shifted so it was easier to cast. We weren't having any luck, but a guy leaving said he had been into big Bluefish just before we got there. Sure enough, about 15 minutes later, wham - a 9 lb Blue took my White/Red Cotton Cordell Pencil Popper and we were off to the races. For about two hours there was steady action, every 5-6 casts, with 8-12 lb Bluefish. I got at least ten of them including the biggest one Paul or I had ever seen - easily 15 lbs. They were hitting near the top of your cast and it was a real blast.

We had fished the whole day from sunrise to sunset and we filleted three big blues by the light of out headlamps and called it a day - a very fun one.
November 1, 2007    -    Hull, MA
Tide:  5:00 a.m. - High Wind:  SW - 15 mph
Start time:  6:00 a.m. Total time:  2 Hrs.
Once or twice a year, in the fall, I venture down to the south shore and fish a spot in Hull called Allerton Point. I've heard they get some nice fish there, and I've hit some blitzes of small stripers, but never caught a keeper. This was one of those late season mornings when you feel like you're the only one still fishing and the fish are long gone. No sign of any life in the water. The birds didn't even dive on my plug because they figured it had to be something other than a fish. Next week I will try RI again and it might be my last time out.
October 30, 2007    -    Marblehead, MA
Tide:  8:45 a.m. - Low Wind:  WNW - 15 mph
Start time:  6:00 a.m. Total time:  5 Hrs.
I started at Castle Rock and fished there until the sun was up. I missed a decent fish at about 6:20 on the black needlefish. I got one 23" striper on a mackerel colored popper. After that, I tried all the spots along 127 all the way into Gloucester. Not a splash. Didn't see any birds or any bait in the water.
October 25, 2007    -    Charlestown, RI
Tide:  7:45 a.m. - High Wind:  NE - 15-20 mph
Start time:  6:00 a.m. Total time:  5 1/2 Hrs.
Back to RI. I started in Narragansett at the Pt. Judith Lighthouse and then tried Aunt Carrie's, Newton Ave. and Black Pt - absolutely nothing. It was a rainy, overcast morning, so there was still plenty of fishing left. With a dropping tide, I decided to try the beach next to Quonnie Breachway again. There was a strong wing blowing left to right. Finally, I caught a couple fish and would have gotten more with sharper hooks on my white Gibbs. I got 26" and 28" stripers and I missed 6-8 more fish that went after my plug including a couple decent size stripers that I got a good look at. I think I'm finally beginning to understand when and how to fish that spot.
October 22, 2007    -    Charlestown, RI
Tide:  5:00 a.m. - High Wind:  SW - 15-20 mph
Start time:  5:45 a.m. Total time:  5 Hrs.
I drove to southern RI and fished the rocky beach just east of the Quonnie breachway. The tide was very promising and the fishing reports in that area had been great the week before. There was a strong wind blowing right to left. Oh well, talk about getting skunked. I worked up and down the beach plus the breachway and absolutely nothing. Then I drove to the Charleston breachway and made a few casts. Then I drove to Narragansett and tried Black Pt., Bass Rock, Newton and Hazard Ave. Bupkis. So many of the RI spots look very fishy in the fall, but I've yet to catch the right morning.
October 19, 2007    -    Cape Cod, MA
Tide:  5:45 a.m. - High Wind:  SSW - 15-20 mph
Start time:  5:45 a.m. Total time:  6 Hrs.
I fished most of the morning along Race Point Beach. There was a strong wind at my back and it was raining steadily most of the morning. Between 6:30 and 7:30 there were plenty of Bluefish in the water - 4-7 lbs. I caught five or six on a Gibbs popper. After Race Pt., I made a few casts at Herring Cove Beach - nothing doing. I decided to stop on my way home and make some casts at Ballston Beach where I've caught some nice Stripers in past seasons. I had a few follows and swirls and was about to pack it in when a guy showed up and hooked a Bluefish. After that it was constant action with 5-7 lb blues. I got five of them and then quit for the day. Just like last year, I can't get that late season keeper.
October 16, 2007    -    Cape Cod, MA
Tide:  3:15 a.m. - High Wind:  WNW - 20-25 mph
Start time:  5:30 a.m. Total time:  3 Hrs.
Big wind this morning at Race Point Beach. No birds. Walked the whole beach again and all I got was one 20" Striper. Plenty of guys fishing along the beach but all I saw caught were two small Bluefish. Seems like I missed the great fishing of last week.
October 15, 2007    -    Cape Cod, MA
Tide:  9:00 p.m. - Low Wind:  WNW - 5-10 mph
Start time:  5:00 p.m. Total time:  2 1/2 Hrs.
Went back to Race Point Beach to fish sunset. Winds had died down. The birds were way off shore. Just got a couple schoolies.
October 15, 2007    -    Cape Cod, MA
Tide:  8:30 a.m. - Low Wind:  WNW - 15 mph
Start time:  6:00 a.m. Total time:  7 Hrs.
After reading a week's worth of very good reports from Nelson's Bait & Tackle, I decided to take a ride down to the Cape to fish Race Point. I walked and plugged the whole 1.75 miles from the parking lot out to the point. There was a pretty strong NW wind blowing right at you and almost everyone was fishing big tins. At false dawn the water was filled with small Stripers. I got about six on a white needlefish. Unfortunately, the 7th one was then inhaled by a seal so I lost a $16 needlfish. There were tons of birds working out of casting range, but by 7:30 they had come closer to shore and now there was a nice mix of 5-8 lb blues and 23-25" very fat Stripers. I got about six of each on tins and poppers.
October 11, 2007    -    Manchester by the Sea, MA
Tide:  12:00 noon - High Wind:  ENE - 10-15 mph
Start time:  11:30 a.m. Total time:  3 Hrs.
It was another day of drizzle and light rain so I sneaked out in the late morning to try Lobster Cove again. It was a little before high tide, and there was a nice chop on the water, but many casts produced no hits. I then tried B&W and Singing beach. There were birds working out of casting range at Singing. I next tried the rocks in Magnolia and got two small Stripers. Back to Singing Beach where the birds were closer, but still out of range. I got one more small Striper. I'm beginning to think that the whole idea of big Stripers in October is a myth.
October 10, 2007    -    Gloucester, MA
Tide:  5:10 a.m. - Low Wind:  SE - 5-10 mph
Start time:  6:00 a.m. Total time:  7 Hrs.
It was a drizzly, overcast day. I started on the rocks at the end of Pebble and then fished Cape Hedge, Long Beach, Atlantic Rd and Niles. Nothing. Then I went to the lighthouse and there was some action there - I got five stripers 18-20". I tried Atlantic Rd. again, then Magnolia, B&W beach and Singing Beach. Nothing. Finally, I went to Lobster Cove. Conditions were great and it was an hour after high tide. On my fifth cast with a 1 oz Gibbs in Mackerel, I had a big fish come out of the water and jump over the plug. That was it. Never another swirl in over an hour of casting.
October 8, 2007    -    Gloucester, MA
Tide:  10:00 a.m. - High Wind:  Calm
Start time:  7:00 a.m. Total time:  4 Hrs.
It's Columbus Day - no school - so I took the kids fishing in Rockport and Gloucester, and we met up with Paul and his grandsons. We started at Pebble and then tried Cape Hedge, Long Beach, Paul's Cove and, finally, Niles. Two small stripers at Paul's Cove and that was it. It was a great day for fishing with drizzle and heavily overcast skies. Too bad for the kids that we couldn't find a spot with lots of schoolies. Giulia learned to cast on her own!
October 5, 2007    -    Gloucester, MA
Tide:  7:30 a.m. - High Wind:  Calm
Start time:  5:45 a.m. Total time:  4 Hrs.
I fished with Paul. We tried at least seven spots in Rockport and Gloucester. No birds working and very few fish. Paul caught a few at Pebble before we hooked up. I got a 20" striper at Niles and that was about it. It was another warm summer like day, but we never caught up with the fish. I still haven't caught a keeper this year in Gloucester. I will try to rectify that.
October 3, 2007    -    Ipswich, MA
Tide:  5:00 a.m. - High Wind:  Calm
Start time:  6:00 a.m. Total time:  4 1/2 Hrs.
Patience paid off this morning. I decided to give the beach front at Crane another try. There was heavy fog all morning, but otherwise it was like a summer day - no wind, almost no surf and warmish water. I caught a bluefish on my first cast, but after that there was only occasional action when some small to medium stripers would come through quickly. By 9:00 I'd caught half a dozen stripers up to 26" and a couple small blues. I was fishing my favorite spot an hour before dead low tide at 10:00 when, finally, a nice fish crashed my yellow/red Gibbs pencil. Good fight and 36", 17 lbs in the cooler. Nothing after that. A long morning that ended well.
October 1, 2007    -    Gloucester, MA
Tide:  3:00 a.m. - High Wind:  5-10 mph - SSE
Start time:  5:30 a.m. Total time:  4 1/2 Hrs.
I started at the rocks in Magnolia at about 5:30 and there was nothing doing. I next tried two different spots along Atlantic Rd. in Gloucester and didn't get even a hit. Finally, I fished near the lighthouse in Gloucester and there was pretty good action there. I probably caught 12-15 stripers - most between 20-24" with the biggest 27". All on top with the bone Jumpin Minnow or white/red Gibbs PP. Would have liked to get a bigger fish, but it was a beautiful fall day and I enjoyed the action.

Tide:  7:00 p.m. - Low Wind:  5-10 mph - WNW
Start time:  8:00 p.m. Total time:  2 1/2 Hrs.
Fished Castlerock and Deveraux and was completely skunked. The water was incredibly low, so I hung around well into the incoming tide, but it didn't make any difference. I never had a hit or a bump. Just dead.
September 25, 2007    -    Block Island, RI
Tide:  7:15 p.m. - High Wind:  15-25 mph - SW
Start time:  6:00 p.m. Total time:  5 1/2 Hrs.
We hit it pretty hard because it was the end of the trip. There was a strong SW wind. We started at Sandy Point, moved to Cow Cove, then to "the shoot" and finally back to Cow Cove. We only got one fish. At about 11:30 I caught a nice 30" Striper - that was it. Pretty amazing trip. Only three fish in about 10 hours of fishing but one of them was 40 lbs. Photos from the short trip.

Tide:  7:00 a.m. - High Wind:  10-15 mph - SW
Start time:  5:15 a.m. Total time:  3 Hrs.
We fished the rocks below SE Light. While it was dark we worked the rocks south of the steps and each got a couple hits but no fish. At first light we walked and plugged the rocky beach north of the steps. I got lots of hits and splashes on the white and red Gibbs PP, but could only get one schoolie. Missed a few decent fish. Went to breakfast - will try again tonight.

A quick trip to the Block with a good friend who is out to Boston on business from California. This is a classic surf casting story. I have fished BI hard for seven weeks over the past three summers in quest of a forty pound Striper. Best I've caught is 33 lbs. My friend is an experienced fisherman but has never done any surf fishing on the north Atlantic and the biggest Striper he's ever caught was 20" on a lake.

We arrived on the ferry, had a quick sandwich and decided to fish the spot north of Grove Point where I did so well in July. It was 9:30 with a bright full moon when we reached the water and we were both fishing black needlefish with teasers. About 15 minutes into it, my friend hooked and lost a fish. About 10 minutes later I looked over and his rod was doubled over and his Van Staal singing loudly. I saw the fish flop on the surface way out in front of him and I said " that's a big fish - well over 20 lbs". When he finally got it near the sand, we both said "holy shit". Fat and 46" - 40 lbs 8 oz. Unbelievable. We didn't get another fish that night.

I went back to Gloucester this morning because we were having friends for dinner and Simona wanted me to bring home a nice Striper. I started at a little cove along Atlantic Ave. and on my 3rd cast with the Stezko needle I hooked the dinner fish, set the hook and then dropped it shortly thereafter - and, of course, that was it. I caught a couple decent blues and a couple schoolies near the lighthouse and then went back to Atlantic Ave. Lots of guys fishing but no fish that I could see. I got one more nice bluefish off the rocks and took three blues home to my disappointed wife. Nevertheless, our friends seemed to enjoy the grilled Bluefish.

Tide:  7:00 a.m. - High Wind:  5-10 mph - ENE
Start time:  4:45 a.m. Total time:  5 Hrs.
Fished the first 45 minutes of darkness on the rocks along Atlantic Avenue and caught one 22" fish. Moved to Niles Beach, Cape Hedge, Pebble, back to Niles and finally to the breakers jetty. Got a couple more 22-24" at Pebble. Saw Steve Papows and he, of course, has been catching some nice fish but not as many as in some past Septembers. A lot of fishing on a perfect morning for three small fish. Where are the great fish I caught last September?

Start time:  5:00 a.m. Total time:  2 1/2 Hrs.
Fished Crane with Paul this morning and it was a bust. Conditions seemed pretty good - great cloud cover, little wind, nice chop on the water, some bait. We worked our favorite spots for almost three hours and only got one 24" Striper. No birds working anywhere. What happened to those big fish?
September 17, 2007    -    Gloucester, MA
Tide:  3:30 a.m. - High Wind:  10 mph - NE
Start time:  4:45 a.m. Total time:  3 Hrs.
Fished the first 45 minutes of darkness at Pebble Beach where I rarely catch fish and didn't get even a tap this morning. Moved to the rocks along Atlantic Ave. and caught a couple before sunrise on the black needle with teaser and then three more after sunrise with yellow/red Gibbs PP. Biggest was 25". Not many fisherman out.
September 15, 2007    -    Marblehead, MA
Tide:  8:00 a.m. - Low Wind:  5-10 mph - NW
Start time:  4:45 a.m. Total time:  2 Hrs.
I caught a nice fish this morning at Castlerock. There was a light steady rain and I was the only one fishing. I was fishing a blk & purple Stezko needlefish with a dropper teaser. Between 5:00 and 6:00 I caught two 20" stripers, both on the teaser. A few minutes after six I hooked a good fish. After it took the teaser, it jumped all the way out of the water and then made a long run. It was so strong and full of energy that I thought it was bigger than it turned out - 38" and 20 lbs. That was it for the morning and I went home and my son snapped a photo before I transformed the fish into 6 lbs of lovely fillets.

Today was a no school day (Jewish New Year) so I took my son fishing in Marblehead. When we arrived, there were fish breaking everywhere, but they wouldn't hit anything we tried. About an hour later we started getting some hits and I caught a couple and Nico caught one - about 20". At about 7:00 a guy on my left caught a nice fish - looked like 35-36" on a surface plug and then the bite died. Nico caught his fish with a white Jumpin Minnow. Last year at this time I had a streak of eight consecutive outings with at least one fish of 35" or greater so my expectations in September are very high.

Well, at least I didn't get skunked. After a full day of rain and thunderstorms, the winds shifted from NE to SW and, along with a new moon, I thought there might be some big fish at Crane Beach. I arrived at about 11:00 pm and I was the only one there on a very dark night with no stars and no moon. I fished a couple of my favorite spots pretty hard and all I could come up with was a 26" and two 15" stripers. For going out on that big beach alone on such a dark night I should have been rewarded with much better. At about 1:30 am the clouds began to clear and the bright stars had the same effect as false dawn in the morning. Even though the stars provide relatively little light, it seemed like someone had turned on the lights compared with the total darkness of before.

Went back to the beach front on Crane to fish the incoming because I had so much fun there on Friday morning. I was a little pessimistic because I rarely find fish there with a NE wind. I wish I hadn't seen a couple guys catch two nice stripers with live eels, because then I could say that there were no fish there. I never had a hit or a splash in over three hours of casting. Not my morning.

For some reason I went back to Crane, all the while thinking that I would regret it, and I ended up having a fine morning of fishing. Fishing my favorite spot on the beach front, I caught a 40" striper at 5:30 on a white needlefish with a teaser. At about 7:00 Brian joined me from a spot further down the beach and some big fish came in at about 7:30. I had switched to a white Gibbs pencil and I landed a fat 36 incher and then, a few casts later, hooked a terrific fish that gave me my best fight of this season. Even after I got it close to shore it kept making run after run. It was over 43" and easily 30 lbs, and I wished that I could keep it, but I had already kept the 40 incher. A few casts later, I missed another big fish and then the bite died. It's a blast catching fish that size on surface plugs after the sun is already up!

I needed to visit the Surfland tackle store so I fished the beach to the right of the jetty at the mouth of the Merrimac. I plugged the beach walking about a half mile south from the jetty and it was dead. I got one 15" striper while it was still dark. The highlight of my morning was a nice chat with Kay at Surfland. She fixed the anti-reverse on my son's Penn reel while talking fishing with me.

I decided to fish Labor Day morning at Crane, but it's time to start trying some other spots. I fished three spots on the beach front and caught seven fish from 18 to 29" - mostly 22-25". The wind shifted from southerly to westerly after the sun rose. I caught the first five fish with a black needlefish and a teaser and almost all took the teaser (I also got two at once). After the sun came up, I caught a couple on Brian's favorite lure, the Smack-it.

I fished Crane Beach again one day after the full moon, and it was another frustrating night. I fished the incoming at my favorite spot on the beach front and all I caught were 5-6 fish that were 18-24". I walked down the beach after the tide turned and ran into Aaron and we fished for a little while in front of the sand bar. On my 2nd cast I hooked my first decent fish of the night but it got off. Nothing after that.

I fished Crane Beach again. It was a frustrating night. One day before the full moon and the beach was well lit and it was a beautiful night with great conditions. I walked down the beach to fish my favorite spot on the incoming and tied on the black Stezko needle. On my first 25 casts I missed five fish - one big splash, three hard hits and one nice fish that was on for maybe 30 seconds! How do you miss five fish at night with a slow moving needle with two big, very sharp trebles? Then I stayed out there too long and got wet walking back in with water up to my neck! I walked further down the beach to fish the outgoing and only got more wet from the waves, but had no more action. What seemed, at first, like it was going to be a fantastic night of fishing turned into a bust. If I'd landed one of those big fish, it would have made all the difference.

I fished my usual spots on the beach front for the first couple hours and didn't even get a hit. Then Brian and his friend Bill came by and I followed them all the way to the end of the beach. We fished out there for about an hour and no one had even a splash. We fished our way back to where I had first seen them and, bang, Brian hooked a nice fish. On my next cast, a good fish took my white Gibbs Pencil. Brian's was 37" and mine was 34" and they were both fat. It was a nice way to finish the morning.

What's the deal with West Beach? I've caught fish at virtually every known hotspot on BI and I can't catch a fish at West Beach. I've heard good things about it but I'm cursed there. The cottage we've rented is across the street so I've really been trying to break my bad luck there, but nothing doing. This morning I fished West Beach on the outgoing from dark into sunrise and all I got was a 5 lb Bluefish - not another hit and I tried lots of different plugs. Oh well - I need to ask the locals how and when to fish that spot.

I'm back on Block Island for a week - with my family this time - so I won't be doing as much fishing. I did sneak out tonight to try the spot at Cow Cove where I caught all the nice fish a few weeks ago. The fish were not there, and all I got was one good hit in the first two hours. I finally caught a 31" striper and then a 26 in the last 20 minutes. I took the 31 to the fillet station.

I fished the beach front at Crane - probably 3/4 mile south of the main beach. The first hour I moved around a lot and never even had a bump. At about 2:00 I lost a good fish and then caught a fat 40" striper. A little while later I added a 36" fish. My neighbors had been asking when I was going to bring fresh fish, so I dragged the 40 and 36 (40 lbs in total) all the way back to the car. I caught 5-6 fish - all between 2:00 and 2:45 and all on a black Stezco needle.

I walked quite a way down the beach at Crane to begin a long night of fishing the day before a new moon. On my 3rd cast, I caught a 31" striper on the black needle and Paul arrived just in time to see me taking out the hook. I told him to get busy fishing because I'd had a good hit on my 2nd cast as well. After a few casts, Paul hooked a good fish and then I was into another one. When I got my 27" fish back to the beach, I saw Paul's on the sand - 42" and fat - probably 30+ lbs. A big, beautiful fish. Paul also got a 35 incher and after that it was only schoolies for the rest of the night. I released the 31" fish because I was sure I'd catch more and bigger ones as the night progressed so Simona is still waiting for me to bring home an August striper.

I rarely go out fishing so late in the morning, but Brian had told me that he'd caught some big fish the previous morning at Crane around high tide after the sun was already up and he told me the spot. So, on this rainy overcast morning I headed back there. There were lots of fish showing on top of the water and birds working, but the fish were small and weren't too interested in my lures. I fished a lot of the beach for a long time but only caught 5-6 fish between 15 and 22".

My wife says that I never bring home fish in August and I desperately want to prove her wrong, but I haven't been having much luck.

Tide:  2:30 a.m. - Low Wind:  5-10 mph - SW

I fished the front of Crane Beach. I probably should have arrived a couple hours earlier but I wanted to fish into the sunrise. There was only a sliver of moon but it was unusually bright as were the stars and frequent shooting stars. Despite such a beautiful night, there weren't any striped bass - at least not at the spot that I chose. I think I caught a 14" fish.

How many times has this happened to you? I arrived at Castlerock to fish the beginning of the incoming just after midnight. I walked to my spot, and on my third cast with a black needlefish I hooked a nice fish. I set the hook and fought him most of the way in and just as I was thinking about how we would prepare him for dinner he disappeared. I wasn't upset because I figured there must be plenty of fish around if I hooked one on my third cast. Three hours later, not even another hit. Go figure.

Back to fishing on my home turf - Boston's north shore. Went out on the rocks in Gloucester on Atlantic Avenue. The water was flat and unusually low for high tide. It was dead. I caught a 15" striper. I miss Block Island.

Well, I hate to say that last night was the end, but I just couldn't get up when the alarm went off at 2:30 this morning. Too little sleep for too many days. I was really hoping to try my secret spot in Cow Cove one more time on an incoming tide with a perfect SW wind. But, it wasn't meant to be. Back to Boston's north shore for some August fishing.

Not easy to decide where to go on this final night of the trip. Picked Black Rock because it's the first spot where I caught big fish on Block even though it fishes much better on the incoming. Sure enough, couldn't find any fish there. After many casts without even a swirl, I decided to try Charleston Beach. Pretty much the same result there except I managed to foul hook and land one 23" striper.

Tried SW Point again. Used to be a sure thing for me, but not on this trip. I got four stripers, with the biggest being 27", and one small bluefish. With a morning incoming tide, and an hour fishing in darkness, I'd hoped to do much better than that.

Tide:  5:00 p.m. - High Wind:  5-10 mph - SW
Start time:  6:30 p.m. Total time:  3 1/2 Hrs.
Went back to Charleston Beach at sunset. The water was very flat. I wasn't getting any hits in the surf on the beach, so I went to the rocks on the left. There were lots of fish in close probably feeding on sand eels which are all over the island. They were making swirls and splashes on the surface. However, they wouldn't hit anything in my bag. Every surf caster has been through this, but it's still so frustrating. Nothing worked - even tried the white Netters lance that looks just like a sand eel. Then I went to the spot in Cow Cove. Water was very low and very flat - no hits there either, Skunked.

Was late getting down to SE Light. Had one good hit on the black needle while it was still pretty dark. Got a 22" striper on a white popper at sunrise.

I fished Charleston Beach on the west side of the Island and had a really fun night - first time I've done well at this spot. I went there on a tip from John at Twin Maples Bait & Tackle. At sunset the surf was full of blues and bass aggressively hitting my poppers. It was hard to hook up because of the rolling surf, but I got 3 blues and 2 stripers - one striper was 28". When it got dark, I walked to the rocky south side of the beach and hooked a 30" fish on my first cast with the blurple SS needle. Three casts later, I caught a 33 incher and then a 26 and that was it. I think I should have gone to that side of the beach sooner, but I was having too much fun with the popper.

The days and the fishing seem to be winding down for me here on BI. However, a big fish or a good outing could rejuvenate me. This morning I fished my secret spot in Cow Cove for an hour with no luck before walking the 1/2 mile north to Sandy Point. Nothing doing there either. I got one 22" striper and that was it.

Everything's conspiring against me right now. Wrong wind. Wrong tide. Stormy weather. I went to the southwest corner of the island to have the wind at my back. I also went out in the late morning because of considerable cloud cover. Couldn't find the fish. Finally from a rock a little south of SW Point, I thought I saw a little swirl behind my yellow popper. Sure enough, several more casts to the same spot produced three 22" stripers and that was it.
July 21, 2007    -    Block Island, RI
Tide:  8:15 p.m. - Low Wind:  Calm
Start time:  7:00 p.m. Total time:  8 Hrs.
I pretty much pulled an all-nighter and did pretty well, but didn't get the jumbo striper I was after. During the day I had scouted the roughly mile of rocky shore between SW Point and Black Rock and this is where I fished for most of Saturday night. I walked south from SW Point and got up on a rock with the sun setting. First cast with a yellow & red Gibbs and I got a 25" fish. Two casts later a fish knocked my plug three feet in the air. Next cast, a 40"+ striper came out of the water and missed - I love it! However, all I got on that rock was four more 25-26" fish.
Walked most of the way to Black Rock and got up on a big flat rock that I love at about 10:00 with the tide now coming in. First 45 minutes and nothing. Then a 37" striper took my B&P needle and I landed it. A few casts later and I had a bigger fish on for a long fight. Damn if it didn't get off about 15 feet in front of me. And that was it.
I walked all the way back and drove to the spot north of Grove Pt. to finish the long night. It was about 1:30 am when I got to the spot. First cast and I got a 29" fish. I got a couple more good hits, but it was pretty slow. Just when I was ready to quit, I hooked a nice fish. I landed a 36" beauty and decided to keep it, even though that meant a 3:00 am trip to the fillet station on the dock. No jumbo for the tournament, but a lot of fun.

Tide:  6:34 p.m. - Low Wind:  15-20 mph - NE
Start time:  7:00 p.m. Total time:  5 1/2 Hrs.
A bad start to the tournament for me. I started north of SE Light and got just one splash. After that, I fished for an hour between the shoot and Ballard's Beach. Nothing at all there. Finally, I went to the obvious spot north of Grove Pt. However, the conditions were very different for the first time with a NE wind. I got there at 11:00 and got two 29's within the first half hour. After that, it was dead and I quit at 12:30 even though I had planned to fish until 3:00 am with the 1:00 am high tide.

This was a long night/morning of fishing. I'm warming up for a fishing tournament that starts this weekend on BI. I started at my spot north of Grove Pt. It was slow, but I picked up a 32", a 29" and two 26" stripers over two hours on the black Stezko. Now, I walked out to Sandy Pt. The conditions were finally perfect out there with a big rip extending a mile out to sea. I first fished the west facing beach and 26" stripers were aggressively hitting my white Gibbs pencil - I got three. Next I walked carefully out into the rip and fished a yellow SS needle. Every 4th or 5th cast, a big blue would go for the plug. I got three blues, biggest almost 33", and one 29" striper. They were still there when I quit, but I was beat. Fun morning - wish Paul had seen Sandy Pt. like that. Contest starts tonight and ends Sunday night.

I slept late. The weather has changed to cloudy and humid with thunderstorms in the area. With all the cloud cover, I went to SE Light at 10:00 am to fish the incoming. Not even a splash. Then I went to Charleston beach. Same result. Finally, made a few casts at the Channel. Nothing doing.

Paul took the 3:00 ferry back to Pt. Judith this morning. I decided to try Black Rock at sunset. The hard afternoon rains had washed clay and silt into the surf and it was a brownish color - I had no luck at all. After casting for over an hour I headed back to the spot south of Sandy Pt. Not as much action and no big fish tonight. I did get two 27" and a fat 31" striper and dropped 3-4 more fish about the same size.

Paul and I started at the Sandy Pt. We fished about 2 1/2 hours in beautiful conditions - gorgeous sunset. However, there was no wind, the water was flat and there were few fish. Paul got three stripers - all 24-25" on top water plugs. Then we walked to our new spot north of Grove Point. I got a 29" on the first cast. We fished until 1:30 and got eight stripers - Paul got a 28" and a 37"; I caught a 37", 36", 35", 31", 29" and 25". All the fish were taken on black or blurple Stezko Needlefish. What a place!

After getting in so late, we were both beat and didn't get up until 5:00. We walked out to the north rip and got a couple small stripers, but the sun was bright by the time we started fishing.

Paul and I started at SW Point with a beautiful sunset and an incoming tide. We had great expectations. After casting for an hour without a splash, we decided to move to the east side and try Clay Head again. Same result there after another hour of casting. Where are the fish? We spent the balance of the night at the new spot north of Grove Point. Paul had a frustrating night losing several nice fish including one big one right in front of him. I got five fish - three 27", one 31" and one very fat, very strong 40" beauty that gave the best fight I've had in a while. I was surprised it wasn't bigger after the time it took to land it.

Paul and I fished Black Rock. Not much doing there. The conditions seemed great, but very little action. Paul got two - a 25" and a 27". I got one 24".

Tide:  9:15 p.m. - High Wind:  5 mph - SW
Start time:  6:30 p.m. Total time:  4 1/2 Hrs.
Paul and I started at "Pots & Kettles" on the east side. We stayed there about an hour and a half and caught 9 bluefish and one 29" striper. The blues were 5-6 lbs. Next we went to the spot where I'd caught the big fish Friday night near the North Light. Fish were there again, but not as many and not as big. We each got two keepers between 30 and 32". Got them all on black and purple needles.

Tide:  9:00 a.m. - High Wind:  15-20 mph - SSW

Paul and I fished SE Light. We started out on the north side where I got just one 27" striper. Not much sign of the big fish that kept missing the previous morning. We walked back to the big rocks on the south side of the steps and on my first cast with a white Gibbs PP I hooked a big fish that I saw take the plug. Good long fight and landed a fat 41" bass. Got one schoolie after that and that was it. Hopefully, tonight will be Paul's turn.

Tide:  8:30 p.m. - High Wind:  10-15 mph - SSW
Start time:  6:30 p.m. Total time:  2 1/2 Hrs.
I fished what the locals call "the shoot", which is a rocky area a little south of Ballard's beach. All I got was a 9 lb bluefish on a white needle. My friend Paul arrives tonight to fish with me for the next three days.

Seems like the fish are on the east side of the island, so I went back to SE Light. I got a late start because I'd gotten back late the previous night. I walked north from the steps casting a white needlefish. There were big fish in the water! Four or five times, fish of at least 25 lbs came out of the water and missed my plug. I never hooked up. Skunked.

Start time:  6:30 p.m. Total time:  4 1/2 Hrs.
Walked out to the northern tip of BI to fish what the locals call either Sandy Point or the North Rip. It's a dangerous rip where BI Sound and the Atlantic Ocean meet over a two mile long sandbar and fisherman have died there by taking "one more step out" and losing footing. There are often a mix of blues and bass there and almost always some good sized bluefish. Not tonight. 2 1/2 hours of casting produced one three pound blue.

I started the long walk back in the dark and decided to make a cast with my blk & purple needlefish every 100 paces or so. A little more than half way back, at a spot no one ever fishes, wham! I was on a big fish and lost it. I cast again and got a nice bump and then I knew I'd gotten really lucky. In the next two hours I landed four nice fish - three between 41 & 42" and one about 37". I lost another four about the same size and got dozens of bumps and hits. It was beautiful. I should have caught ten but who's complaining. Tired, I finally took a 28lb striper to the fillet station.

Fished SW Point again. Just like yesterday morning, the first 45 minutes, while it was still pretty dark, were dead. That's strange and frustrating since it's usually the best time. It was much slower than the the day before. I only got two 24" fish and had maybe 8-10 hits where I didn't hook up.

Fished SW Point, one of my favorite spots, for the first time this summer. It's a good spot to fish a morning incoming tide. It started slow, but then there was pretty good action from 4:30 to 6:00. I got two small keepers plus another 8-10 stripers in the 20-24" range. I used an assortment of plugs - the yellow stuff seemed to work best.

SE Light again - I'm in a rut. First fished the south side, then the north side. I was trying to finally fish an incoming tide so I got out there at 2:30. Heavy fog so no light until about 5:00. I wasn't rewarded for my diligence. I got two stripers - one 20" and another 27". Got the 27 on a white SS needle.

Back on the Block! I love this place. Went to SE Light at sunset. This spot is better on the incoming, but who cares - I was just happy to be there. I got a couple 25" fish on the white Needle just at the last light. About 30 minutes after dark, a lovely 33" striper took my blurple SS Needle and became Sunday's dinner. Day one - one keeper.

Sheesh. The month of June started out great, but now I'm in a deep slump. I took my longtime friend Matthew Puma to one of my favorite spots on Marblehead Neck. The fishing was completely dead. Not even a splash. It felt like a storm was coming in. After a couple hours we headed up 127 towards Gloucester and fished for an hour at Lobster Cove. Same result. Next time I fish, I'll be on Cuttyhunk.

I was in the car at 2:15 a.m., and pulled into Black Pt. at 3:45 just in time for false dawn. Unfortunately, no fish - skunked. A couple nice splashes on the yellow Gibbs PP and that was it. After Black Pt., I made a few casts at Bass Rocks and then Newton Ave. Lots of bait fisherman around.

Fished the back side of Crane beach. Not much doing. Got one schoolie Striper. Brian said there were Blues further towards the ocean.

Fished the back side of Crane beach. It was an overcast morning. Both Paul and Aaron arrived later. It was pretty much all Bluefish again. I got one Striper, about 22", and the rest were good size Blues. I got 7 or 8 of them and took home a 10 pounder. Fished Cotton Cordell Pencil Popper and Yo-Zuri Mag-Darter - both White with Red head.

Fished the Point for the first time this year. Was in the water at dead low tide. Caught five stripers 12-16" and one 26". Got most of them on the Blurple Bomber. A handful of other fisherman fishing bait.

Fished the back side of Crane beach. It was an overcast morning after a major rainstorm. As I walked to my spot, I made a few casts and picked up two small Stripers plus a small keeper. Then I caught a small Bluefish, which I thought was a stray. After that, it was nothing but Blues and lots of them. Mostly 4-7 lbs, but I caught two that were over 30". About 15 Blues in all. Fished Cotton Cordell Pencil Popper and Yo-Zuri Mag-Darter - both White with Red head.

Took my brother Michael, who is visiting from California, to the Castle Neck River behind Crane Beach. We caught a handful of schoolies and I caught my first 2007 keeper - a nice 35" fish on the bone colored Jumpin Minnow. Thanks to Brian for showing me the best spot to fish that morning.

I fished a favorite early spring spot, the Castle Neck River behind Crane Beach. Pretty good wind blowing from right to left. Caught my first 2007 Striper at 4:45 am - a whopping 10". I got about 20 fish in all, most between 14" and 16" with the biggest close to 20". Got almost all of them on a bone colored Jumpin Minnow on top of the water.

First time out in 2007!! Every year I forget how early the sun comes up in the early spring, so I got out an hour late. Made some casts at Black Pt., Aunt Carrie's Restaurant & Pt. Judith Light. Used all my spring lures. Skunked - not a hit. No sign of fish. No other fisherman.
